Dancing with Shadows: The Cost of Living on a Filtered Screen.
We live in an era where our primary windows to the world are no longer physical panes of glass, but glowing digital screens. The modern tragedy of social media is that you don’t even have to look for the noise-uninvited illusions constantly breach your timeline. Strangers, luxury reels, and curated perfection perform on your screen every single day, quietly eroding your inner peace.
Even those of us who have traveled widely, seen the world, and gathered rich life experiences fall into this subtle psychological trap: Look at how effortlessly they live. Are we doing enough?
The Turkey’s Vanity and the Crow’s Delusion
There is an insightful ancient proverb in Tamil literature:
Seeing the majestic peacock dance, the wild turkey spread its plain feathers to imitate it.
To this, I would add a modern observation of my own: when the cuckoo sings its melodious song, the crow mistakenly believes it too is singing, and joins in with its harsh caw- fooling only itself.
This captures the essence of today’s digital FOMO. We watch influencers and strangers perform, and without realizing our own unique voice and worth, we start imitating them-exhausting ourselves to match a rhythm we were never meant to dance to. Look at the rising “Apple Mania” sweeping across societies, where people drain their savings just to hold a new iPhone- all to signal to a digital crowd that they belong. It is the crow trying to sing like a cuckoo, entirely losing its own identity in the process.
The Contrast of Inner Peace
Consider the deep irony of modern existence. We envy the influencer posing in exotic destinations, but we rarely see the echoing emptiness when the ring lights turn off. Many live amidst plush comfort
plagued by severe insomnia, tossing and turning on high-end mattresses inside air-conditioned rooms, unable to buy a single hour of deep, natural sleep.
Meanwhile, a weary worker or a simple traveler resting soundly by the roadside experiences a profound, unbothered tranquility that no money or gadget can purchase. The beggar often sleeps sounder than the king, because peace is never found in external validation-it is found in the quiet rhythm of a settled mind.
Public Stages and Sacred Privacy
What makes today’s “Insta culture” particularly heartbreaking is not just the comparison trap-it is the loss of sacred privacy. We see bios adorned with quotes like “Life is not an Insta reel,” written by the very individuals who broadcast their most intimate domestic moments for fifteen seconds of fame. Simple household chats, raw family interactions, and sacred bonds are stripped of their dignity and tossed into the algorithm for likes and views. Entire families quietly fracture under this pressure, trading authentic human warmth for hollow digital applause.
The Neem Tree and the Mango Tree
This brings us to a simple fable. High atop a grand mango tree, a peacock spread its iridescent feathers and danced for the cheering crowds. But when dusk fell and darkness settled, the crowd vanished, leaving the peacock alone in its cold grandeur.
On a humble neem tree nearby, a small sparrow lived away from the spotlight. No crowds gathered to applaud it, yet its nest pulsated with genuine warmth, surrounded by its partner and chirping chicks. When a violent storm lashed the park, the grand crowd was nowhere to be found. It was the peacock that instinctively used its broad wings to shelter the sparrow’s fragile nest from the wind. In that moment, both realized their truth: the peacock had the grandeur, but the sparrow held the warmth of a true home.
Conclusion: Return to Your Truth
Social media is that crowded mango tree. It offers a fleeting stage, but starves the soul of quiet contentment.
True fulfillment-what the ancient Greeks called "eudaimonia", a deep flourishing that comes from living in harmony with your own nature-does not come from digital applause, mimicking the cuckoo’s song, or a carefully curated reel. It comes from radical self-acceptance. It comes from realizing that your quiet neem tree holds far more peace than someone else’s glittering stage.
Stop trading your real life for a filtered illusion. Close the app, step away from the shadows, and cherish the unscripted beauty of your own quiet world.
